Macerata is the last of the region’s main centers and is well known across the world for its annual open-air opera festival which takes place in the Sferisterio, a neo-classical arena built in the 1820’s. The Renaissance arcades of the Loggia dei Mercanti on the central Piazza della Liberta’ is the most significative piece of architecture.
