It was thriving town at the time of the Magna Graecia and is rich in archaeological interests. Particularly spectacular is the ancient, ruined citadel from where you can enjoy an extraordinary view. The ancient tower of Cirella Vecchia, built to spot the enemy coming from the sea with remains still standing. Covered by a flourishing Mediterranean scrub, in the summer months it is a favourite destination for tourists. After the last destruction at the hands of Napoleon in 1806, the city was built near the sea, in the shadow of the ruins. Cirella gives its name to the small island that emerges opposite the stretch of beach. The seabed around the island, gives rise to occasional and important archaeological finds and the presence of posidonia, an aquatic plant, forms a real underwater prairie.
The marina town of Cirella has some local shops including pharmacy, doctor, fruit-&-veg, meat & fish shops, cafés & restaurants, DIY/garden/tool shops etc, and also nightclub.
Approx. 200m along the main SS18 is a supermarket and the town of Diamante is a short drive north.
