The wonders of Mount Etna for a volcanic autumn

If you have missed the opportunity to visit Sicily in the summer, have you thought about travelling to this wonderful island in autumn?

Autumn has a late start in Sicily. Temperatures remain high until October and sometimes you find yourself in short sleeves and sandals even in November! Autumnal flight and hotel prices drop so that you can save money and enjoy the unique autumnal colours, smells and flavours of this special island.

A different side of Sicily, the volcanic complex of Etna, is wonderful and will make you experience unforgettable emotions, thanks to its varied and unique landscapes. One can move from a wooded area full of greenery to an intermediate habitat with low plants and shrubs, to then arrive at the almost lunar landscapes that characterise the volcanic areas. The flora that you will find on Mount Etna is almost all endemic, you will be able to get to know this thanks to the large number of excursions you can undertake, with different levels of difficulty.

It is possible to visit Etna without a guide only up to 2900 mts and a tour guide is required to see the highest craters. With a little cost one can climb the top (cable car, guide or the Jeep ride) and it is absolutely worth it.

Hiking tours are also available and skiing! Towards the winter, remember to dress for cold temperatures and even cold winds.

Obviously, let’s not forget that Sicily equals great food and excellent full-bodied wines: in the Etna area you will find Sicilian “mountain” cuisine, very tasty and enjoyable. Photo by Shawn Appel on Unsplash
